Asymmetry cannot solve the circularity/regress problem of property structuralism

چکیده
Abstract Strong dispositional monism (SDM), the position that all fundamental physical properties consist in relations to other properties, is naturally construed as property structuralism. J. Lowe’s circularity/regress objection (CRO) constitutes a serious challenge SDM questions possibility of purely relational determination essences. The supervenience thesis A. Bird’s graph-theoretic asymmetry reply CRO can be rigorously proved. Yet fails metaphysically, because it reveals neither metaphysical identities on basis nor specifically sense Asymmetry thus not by itself sufficient for solution CRO. But cannot even help answer when model essences taken basis. Nor necessary reply, structures may well symmetric. A metaphysics grounded structure faces obstacles, and would fundamental. Since essence grounding are notions priority, there no essentially metaphysically prospects “coherentist” basic dim. modal retreat refrains from post-modal conception simply claims play roles necessity unsatisfactory.

15 صفحه اولHow Structuralism Can Solve the ‘Access’ Problem1
According to mathematical structuralism, the subject matter of mathematics is not the study of mathematical objects, but of mathematical structures. By moving away from objects, the structuralist claims to be in a position to solve the ‘access’ problem: structuralism explains the possibility of mathematical knowledge without requiring any access to mathematical objects. Fraser MacBride has chal...
متن کاملRepresentation: The Problem for Structuralism
What does it mean to embed the phenomena in an abstract structure? Or to represent them by doing so? The semantic view of theories runs into a severe problem if these notions are construed either naively, in a metaphysical way, or too closely on the pattern of the earlier syntactic view. Constructive empiricism and structural realism will then share those difficulties. The problem will be posed...
متن کاملIf You Cannot Solve The Problem, Change It! Techniques For Effective Problem Design
Clients often turn to consultants for assistance with problems that are complex or seemingly unsolvable. In our experience, however, we find that in many cases, much of the difficulty comes from the way the problems are framed. In this article, we offer some specific techniques for not just finding problems, but for proactively designing them to be more actionable and solvable in the first plac...
متن کاملDeterministic moles cannot solve liveness
We examine the conjecture that no polynomial can upper bound the increase in the number of states when a one-way nondeterministic finite automaton (1nfa) is converted into an equivalent two-way deterministic finite automaton (2dfa). We study the problem of liveness, which admits 1nfas of polynomial size and is known to defy 2dfas of polynomial size if and only if the conjecture is true. We focu...
